Rick Newell will be speaking about the connection between trafficking and foster care. Of those who were trafficked, 60% have experienced foster care. Rick and the non-profit Route 21 have developed a mentoring program designed to interrupt the cycle of kids in foster care experiencing poverty, homelessness, trafficking, and incarceration. Rick will talk about that program, which includes volunteer opportunities that may be of interest to Rotary members.
Rick Newell left a good career in technology to work with youth at the Rotary Boys and Girls Club in Seattle. From his time there, he came to firmly believe that the need of the hour in the urban core is positive male role models. To meet this need, he started the M.U.S.T. mentoring program. M.U.S.T. finds African American males who are in college and pays them to mentor the most vulnerable high school Black males. Rick left M.U.S.T. in capable hands…
